Abstract

This chartbook presents information about working-age people with disabilities in Maine and enrollment in MaineCare Workers with Disabilities (WWD) Option, an early state Medicaid Buy-in program to eliminate Social Security work disincentives. Enrollment in the program increased steadily between 1999 and 2002, with about 1,535 people enrolling during that time period. Among those enrolled in the WWD Option, the most common disabilities are mental health/substance abuse (59%), mobility impairments (46%) and sensory impairments (35%). According to the chartbook, about one in three people with disabilities in Maine need PAS, compared to about one in four people with disabilities in the United States who need PAS. Further research is needed to understand the impact of the MaineCare WWD Option on those who need PAS.
