House, Peter J.. (March 2002). The direct care paraprofessional workforce providing long-term care services in the United States: Wyoming case study. Center for Health Workforce Studies and the University of Washington.

Abstract:
This paper is part of a larger National Study by the Center for Health Workforce Studies that explores the extent to which policy makers at the state, local, and institutional levels have adequate data on the staffing shortages of paraprofessional workers. Information was collected for the study via reviewing written materials, interviewing key players in state policy, and visiting a long-term care facility in rural Wyoming. All key players expressed interesting in learning more about the cause of staffing shortages. The author found that the greatest contributors to the staffing shortages are low wages, lack of access to training, difficulty of recruitment and retention in remote and isolated communities, and lack of opportunity for career advancement.

Mckee, Garry L. (December 2001). Report to the joint appropriations committee on study of nonprofessional direct care staff recruitment, retention, and wages. Wyoming Department of Health.

Abstract:
This report from the Wyoming Department of Health urges the state to boost the wages of direct-care workers across the spectrum of long-term care and disabilities services by at least $3 an hour over the next two years. The findings identify that direct-care worker turnover rates of over 50% place patients and disabled individuals at risk. Low pay, a shortage of fellow staff members to share work, and a lack of career opportunities are the most commonly cited reason for leaving the field.
