Ask Mike - Does a respite care provider have to be certified to work with people with developmental disabilities

Dear Mike,

Does a respite care provider have to be certified to work with people with developmental disabilities in the state of Wisconsin? They don't live with me. I only take them when they need me. Sometimes I have a respite over night for a few days. I don't run my own business. I work for an adult family organization.

Regards,

Respite in Wisconsin

Dear Respite in Wisconsin,

Thanks for writing. You want to know if respite providers for people with developmental disabilities have to be licensed in the State of Wisconsin. Without more information, your best bet might be to pose your question to the state's Medicaid agency since it sounds like you are describing, primarily, Medicaid funded respite services.

The PAS Center can assist you with obtaining the contact information for Wisconsin's Medicaid agency so you can direct your question to their attention. Go to www.pascenter.org Next, click on "State Information" found at the top of the menu on the left side of the homepage. Next, click on "Agencies Related to PAS". It's the third selection down from the top. Next, click on "Wisconsin" on the map of the USA. Next, click on "Medicaid Agency". Use the contact information to address your question to your state's Medicaid officials.

Take care,

Mike Oxford
