Is a Caring Society Possible? Mobilizing for Social Change

Fifth Annual Carework Conference
Friday, August 10, 2007, 8:30-5:30 pm
CUNY Graduate Center, New York City

CALL FOR PAPERS

The Carework Network is sponsoring a one-day conference that brings together
researchers, policymakers and advocates involved in various domains of
carework. The purpose of the conference is to take stock of what we now know
about the organization of care in the U.S., and to develop strategies that
will begin to effect change at both local and national levels. The
conference will be an important opportunity for carework scholars to connect
with advocates in field who help shape the national agenda on such issues as
paid family and medical leave; early childhood and long-term care; and fair
wages for careworkers.

The Carework Network is an international organization of scholars and
advocates who focus on the caring work of individuals, families,
communities, paid caregivers, social service agencies and state
bureaucracies. Our mission is to address critical issues related to
carework, such as how identities influence carework; how inequality
structures carework; how caring work is recognized and compensated; how
welfare policies influence the distribution of care; and whether and to what
extent citizens have a right to receive, and a duty to provide, care.

The Network welcomes submissions from all academic disciplines, advocacy and
non-profit organizations, and public and private sector organizations. We
also encourage participation by undergraduate and graduate students. The
overall theme for the conference will be "Is a Caring Society Possible?" We
invite papers that fit with theme of the conference and/or the Network's
mission. Authors must submit to one of the following sessions (please
download submission form):

previous years. Some potential topics for the open paper sessions might
include (but should not be limited to): Participatory Research in Carework;
Economic Restructuring & Care; Carework and Nationalism; Emotions and
Carework; Privatization and Care; Health Care Workers; Formal and Informal
Childcare; Formal and Informal Elder Care; Welfare States and Care. We will
attempt to include as many papers as possible on the program, and encourage
submissions (and ideas) that will generate alternative and creative panels.
